Sustainability is a word that gets frequently thrown around, but what, exactly, does it mean? Today on Thought Starters, Caroline Till of FranklinTill and Carole Collet, founder of the Material Futures master’s programme at Central Saint Martins talk about what sustainability means for the rapidly changing world of fashion and design.
A little about our guests:
Caroline Till is co-founder of FranklinTill, a futures agency advising brands like Samsung and Ikea. This year, FranklinTill published their first book, “Radical Matter: Rethinking Materials for a Sustainable Future”, presenting the big ideas that will shape our choices of materials, design methods and manufacturing processes that go beyond what is currently in play. Caroline is also a past course leader of the MA in Material Futures at Central Saint Martins.
Carole Collet, who wrote the forward to Radical Matter, in fact founded the Material Futures master’s programme, then under a different name, and is founder of the Central Saint Martins Design & Living Systems Lab. Last year, she took on the role of LVMH Director of Sustainable Innovation, a close collaboration between Central Saint Martins and the luxury fashion conglomerate, an ambitious project to help embed sustainability both in design education and research, and within its fashion houses.
