As part of our Autmn/Winter Edit, we’re partnering with HQI, local artist incubator, to host a two part Artist Talks series in the Studio, with the first talk, “The Model is the Message” taking place on Thursday 29 October from 17:30 – 20:00 in the Studio.
HQI curates this series to celebrate current and past artists in residence who've come through White City Place. A resident artist moderates each talk, with a guest of their choosing for a conversation shaped by shared practice.
The Model is The Message
From facial recognition and deepfakes to digital privacy, surveillance and the blurred boundaries between technology and creativity: Marcel Top and Tessa Edwards will lead this fascinating short talk on creativity and exploration in Machine Learning and AI as both the instrument and subject of societal critique and reflective self-evaluation.
About the Artists
Tessa Edwards is a Central Saint Martins graduate and creative technologist who moved from fashion into filmmaking and spatial computing before turning to machine learning. Her recent work spans deepfake analysis, psychoacoustics, and steganography and hidden signals to explore perception, concealment, and how intelligent systems operate in dimensions beyond human reach.
Marcel Top is a visual artist working between Belgium and London. Top researches the topics of mass surveillance, privacy and data collection. In his practice, he layers a traditional approach to documentary research with a more experimental use of new technologies (such as facial recognition, movement analysis, and deepfakes).
The event will be held in the Studio, with doors opening at 17:30 and the artists’ talk running from 18:30–19:30.
